What is the Royal Academy of Dance Method?

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method is an internationally recognized ballet training system that provides a structured, age-appropriate approach to learning ballet. Developed by the Royal Academy of Dance in London, the curriculum emphasizes strong technical foundations, musicality, artistry, creativity, and safe, progressive skill development.

Rather than focusing only on performance, the RAD method helps students build confidence, discipline, coordination, and a lifelong appreciation for dance. Students progress through clearly defined levels at a pace that matches their age and experience, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and dancers with long-term goals. Today, the RAD syllabus is taught in more than 80 countries and is trusted by dance educators around the world.

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) was founded in London, England, in 1920 by a group of leading dance professionals who wanted to establish a consistent, high-quality approach to ballet education. Their goal was to create a structured training system that emphasized safe technique, musicality, artistry, and steady progression for dancers of all ages.

Over the past century, the RAD has grown into one of the world's most respected ballet education organizations, with registered teachers and students in dozens of countries. Its internationally recognized syllabus is designed to help students develop strong technical foundations while fostering confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for dance.

The History of RAD

How Students Progress in the Royal Academy of Dance Method

One of the strengths of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method is that it gives students a clear, age-appropriate path for learning ballet. Rather than moving ahead based only on age or how long a child has been dancing, each level builds naturally on the skills learned before it. This helps students develop strong technique, confidence, and a genuine love of dance at a comfortable pace.Over the past century, the RAD has grown into one of the world's most respected ballet education organizations, with registered teachers and students in dozens of countries. Its internationally recognized syllabus is designed to help students develop strong technical foundations while fostering confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for dance.

Pre-Primary and Primary

Young dancers typically begin in Pre-Primary or Primary classes. At these levels, the focus is on building a positive relationship with movement through music, imagination, and creative activities. Children learn basic ballet positions, coordination, balance, rhythm, and classroom etiquette while developing listening skills and confidence in a fun, encouraging environment.

Graded Levels

As students grow, they continue into the graded levels of the RAD program. Each grade introduces new steps, combinations, and musical concepts while reinforcing the foundations learned in earlier classes. Dancers gradually improve their posture, strength, flexibility, balance, and artistry, allowing them to perform more challenging movements with confidence.

Rather than rushing students into difficult techniques, the RAD method encourages steady, consistent progress. This approach helps young dancers build good habits that support healthy movement and long-term development.

Vocational Training

Students who wish to pursue more advanced ballet training can continue into the vocational levels of the RAD curriculum. These classes focus on refining technique, artistry, performance quality, and physical strength while preparing dedicated dancers for increasingly challenging repertoire and, for some, future dance studies or professional opportunities.

A Journey That Grows With Your Child

Every dancer progresses at their own pace. Some children enjoy ballet as a recreational activity for many years, while others discover a passion for more intensive training. The Royal Academy of Dance method is designed to support both paths by providing a structured curriculum that grows alongside each student's abilities and goals. At every stage, the emphasis remains on developing strong technique, musicality, confidence, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for the art of ballet.
